You have made the huge decision to check yourself into rehab to get started on healing from addiction. As you take the first step towards rebuilding your life, you no doubt have questions about what’s appropriate to bring with you for your duration at the residential drug rehab facility.

Here are some of the items to bring and what to avoid to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible:

Appropriate clothing and footwear

It can be tricky to pick out clothing for your rehab stay but you can’t go wrong with clothes that are easy to layer. Choose clothing that is comfortable enough to go from therapy sessions to recreational activities and add some warm clothing in case the weather changes. It’s also recommended to include clothes suitable for the gym or for exercising.

You’ll also need a pair of shoes that are comfortable enough to handle daily activities. Also, include appropriate shoes if you’re going to be doing a lot of outdoor or physical activities.

Toiletries and personal hygiene items

Most rehab facilities allow clients to bring along toiletries and personal hygiene items as grooming is a key part of self-care and recovery. However, it’s advisable to confirm with the facility beforehand what’s allowed as some may not allow people to carry items that contain alcohol or certain ingredients. Items such as hairbrushes, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, and light make-up are often allowed.

Medication that you’re taking

If you’re on any medication, it’s important to notify the facility so they can advise on whether you’ll be allowed to carry it with you. You may be asked to ensure that the medication is in its original packaging and that you bring along a copy of the original prescription to ensure you’re taking the right dose. Keep in mind this might be inspected on arrival at the facility.

Essential documents

Ensure you pack all important documents you may need for admission and a smooth stay at the rehab. This may include some form of ID, insurance, and medical records as well as any legal documents or prescriptions you have. Also include a list of important contacts such as close family members and friends, your therapist or doctor, among others.

Reading material, a journal, or other hobby items

Depending on our schedule, you may have some free time in between therapy sessions or in the evenings. You can use this time to catch up on some reading and journaling or even pursue other hobbies. Again, remember to confirm with the rehab center what sorts of hobby items you’re permitted to bring.
