Residential Inpatient Programs

Addiction is a complex illness that can be devastating both physically and mentally. Residential inpatient programs have emerged as an effective and supportive option to treat addiction. Through this program, patients have access to professional help, including mental health and medical services, and an environment that encourages them to focus on their recovery. These programs are designed to provide a structured, 24-hour environment in which patients can receive intensive and personalized care.

Residential Inpatient Treatment Programs

Introduction

Across the nation, millions of Americans struggle with a severe, often debilitating addiction to drugs or alcohol. If an addiction to drugs or alcohol impacts your day-to-day life, you are not alone. If you have previously completed an addiction treatment program and experienced a relapse, an inpatient residential treatment program may be best suited to help you achieve your addiction treatment goals. In a Midwest residential facility, you are provided with twenty-four-hour care and support in a safe, substance-free environment. At an inpatient rehab center in Ohio, you will have access to a higher level of care than can be provided through an outpatient treatment environment.

If you or a loved one are ready to overcome your addiction to drugs or alcohol and have started researching addiction treatment centers, the options may seem overwhelming. There are thousands of treatment centers in the United States offering different levels of care. There are outpatient programs, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs, and inpatient (or residential) addiction treatment programs. When deciding which program is appropriate to meet your specific treatment needs, you may quickly become overwhelmed.

There are several reasons why people choose addiction treatment over other levels of rehab. Also, specific conditions or levels of addiction severity are often better served in a residential setting. Common examples include:

  • Having tried lower levels of addiction treatment in the past, without success.
  • Concerns about exposure to triggers while actively seeking treatment.
  • Fears about maintaining sobriety in an outpatient treatment environment.
  • Co-occurring medical or mental health disorders.
  • Lack of adequate support in your home environment.
  • An addiction to specific substances from which unsupervised detox can be dangerous.

What’s the Difference Between Inpatient & Outpatient Treatment?

Both inpatient and outpatient rehab programs focus equally on helping patients achieve and maintain sobriety. However, each type (or level of care) has unique benefits that may influence which program can best help you achieve your goals. Inpatient rehab programs, often called residential treatment programs, are intensive programs that require you to stay or “live” at the treatment center throughout your program. These programs are usually best suited for someone struggling with a severe addiction or who has completed treatment before and experienced a relapse.

When you begin an inpatient treatment program, you are required to check into the facility and remain on-site while you work with your treatment team to overcome addiction. A significant benefit to residential treatment is 24/7 access to emotional, medical, and nutritional support. The residential nature of inpatient programs often leads to a higher treatment success rate as remaining at the facility instead of living at home helps reduce the potential for triggering situations or relapse during the treatment process.

Outpatient programs allow you to seek help with your addiction while remaining immersed in your day-to-day environment. Outpatient programs are structured to enable patients to continue working, seeking higher education, or caring for family, while still pursuing potentially life-saving addiction treatment. Depending on the program’s intensity, you will attend therapy between three and five days each week for up to three hours each day. How often you attend therapy and how long each session lasts will depend on your specific addiction treatment plan.

Outpatient programs typically last longer than inpatient programs, due to their less intensive structure, and will often require a longer commitment to meet addiction treatment goals. Most outpatient programs last between three and twelve months. Throughout your program, you will attend a combination of individual (one-to-one), group, and family therapy sessions. Outpatient programs are generally more affordable than inpatient residential programs; however, there is a less intensive level of care and fewer amenities.

Understanding Residential Inpatient Treatment

Although each residential treatment program differs from others in some way, most programs share common, essential features. These common elements contribute to many of the reasons why residential inpatient treatment is generally so successful. Some of the most valuable benefits to Midwest residential treatment include the availability of medically assisted detox and withdrawal, medically assisted maintenance care, frequent and intensive one-to-one therapy sessions, group and family therapy, and post-treatment follow-up care such as aftercare planning and alumni care.

Inpatient programs provide vital benefits to your sobriety journey, including 24/7 care and support during the earliest and often most difficult days of recovery. When you start a residential program, you will work closely with your treatment team to design a unique, individually designed treatment plan that specifically addresses your physical, psychological, nutritional, and spiritual needs during treatment. Studies have shown individualized treatment programs are more successful in helping someone struggling with addiction attain and maintain sobriety. Residential inpatient facilities provide evidence-based treatments and therapies as part of a comprehensive addiction treatment plan.

What to Expect at a Midwest Residential Facility

When you arrive at a Midwest residential facility, you will begin working with members of your treatment team to determine the best therapy models to suit your treatment needs and goals. Treatment staff will conduct a detailed assessment to learn more about your medical history, mental health history, and previous experiences with addiction and addiction treatment. All these details are essential to determining the best course of treatment for you.

After intake, depending on your specific needs, the next steps may include detox. Although challenging, detox is a vital step required to cleanse the body of any substances that may remain. Only after your system is “clean” is it possible to immerse yourself fully and successfully in a drug and alcohol treatment program. At Impact Wellness, our highly trained treatment staff will provide medical supervision, support, and guidance throughout the detox process. This helps ensure support is available to mitigate unpleasant withdrawal symptoms and ensure proper care if you experience severe symptoms during the detox process. Once detox is complete, you can transition into comprehensive addiction treatment therapy and aftercare planning as you progress through treatment and recovery.

The same study also showed that 62% of those who received professional help at a residential treatment facility remained in recovery for three years or more after treatment. Also, 57% of those who made it to the three-year mark remained substance-free for many more years. This study and many others show that seeking professional treatment is vital to recovery and continued sobriety.
