Research indicates that both male and female career firefighters are particularly susceptible to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and addiction, especially following experiences of complex trauma. A study conducted in 2017 found that approximately half of male firefighters reported engaging in binge drinking and heavy drinking within a month, highlighting the significant impact of their work on their mental and emotional well-being.
